Macro. Political style is usually discussed as though it were the packaging on a policy, separable and slightly disreputable. It is not. The same tax rise delivered in two registers is two different events: one is prudence, the other is theft. States understand this better than their critics do, which is why they invest in uniforms, letterheads, the architecture of their ministries and the exact width of a border desk. A regime that gets the aesthetics right can postpone the argument indefinitely.
Social. At close range it functions as a filter, and a very efficient one. An accent, a handshake, the confidence to send food back — these carry no information about ability and enormous information about origin, and the second reading is the one that gets acted on. The filter’s great advantage is deniability: nobody is ever turned away for their vowels. They are turned away for not quite fitting, which is the same sentence with the evidence removed.
Micro. Which brings the question to this page. I am writing about style for readers whose task is to assess mine, and there is no sentence available to me that steps outside the demonstration. Even plainness would be a choice, legible as one. This is not a trap peculiar to examinations; it is the ordinary condition of writing, made briefly visible.
Close. The Latin stilus was a pointed instrument for writing on wax — a thing you could drop, or lose, or stab someone with. It named the tool before it named the manner, and only later slid across to describe the marks the tool left. That order is worth keeping. Style is not applied to the substance afterwards, like varnish. It is the instrument the substance was made with, and there was never a moment when the two were apart.
‘Reproduction’ —
Macro. Governments have started speaking about it in the register once reserved for currency and coal. Birth rates are described as a crisis, a cliff, a collapse; ministries appear with the word in their title. What is being asked of citizens is a private act performed for public accounts. The state cannot legislate it, only bribe and beg. Meanwhile the same governments treat immigration — the one reliable substitute — as a separate and unwelcome subject, as though a population were only allowed to grow in one direction.
Social. But institutions reproduce too, and they are far better at it than families. A school, a profession, a college does not copy people; it copies a type. It takes in the promising and returns them recognisable — same references, same reflexes, same idea of what a serious argument sounds like. This is done without instruction and largely without intent, which is why it is so difficult to interrupt. Every institution that reproduces itself successfully will describe the process as meritocracy, because from the inside that is exactly what it looks like.
Micro. At the smallest scale the word inverts. A reproduction of a painting is worth less than the painting, and each further copy is worth less again; the copy is the thing that loses value by existing in numbers. A child is the opposite — the more there are, the more insistently each is treated as unrepeatable. So we have one word for the process that makes objects cheap and the process that makes persons priceless.
Close. The Latin is administrative rather than intimate: re- and producere, to lead forth again. Everything in the word is in that again. What deserves to be led forth a second time, and who decides. An institution answering that question about itself is doing the most consequential thing it will ever do, and it will almost never call it reproduction.
